23:01Now PlayingIn response to the outcome of a three-alarm fire at the Cedar Apartments in Minneapolis, where five residents were killed last November, Senator Kari Dziedzic and Representative Mohamud Noor announced their intention to carry legislation requiring sprinkler systems in all existing high-rise buildings. Dziedzic and Noor, both DFL lawmakers that represent the neighborhood, addressed the media at a State Capitol press conference Wednesday, February 5.
According the authors, the bill would apply to all buildings that are 75 feet or higher and would require sprinklers to be installed by August 1, 2032. Currently, 40 Minnesota buildings built before 1979 do not have sprinkler systems, including the Cedar High Apartments.
