22:10Now PlayingSenator Sandy Pappas, DFL-St. Paul, and Rep. Kaohly Her, DFL-St. Paul, unveil a bill that would end marriages in Minnesota for people who are 16 or 17 years of age. The legislators appeared with advocates at a State Capitol press conference Thursday, February 13.
"We have a loophole in our state law that allows sixteen- and seventeen-year-olds with parents and a judge to get married," Pappas said. The international standard has become eighteen-years-of-age, she explained. Current Minnesota law establishes age eighteen as the age of consent, and parental and judicial consent is required for sixteen- and seventeen-year-olds.
