5:12Now PlayingThe Senate Health and Human Services Committee advanced a plan Thursday, February 13, that would create an insulin assistance program to assist Minnesotans struggling to afford the life saving medicine. Sponsored by Senator Scott Jensen, GOP-Chaska, the measure would require individuals or families with low to modest incomes to pay a copayment of $75 dollars for a 30-day supply of the drug.
An amendment offered by Senator Melissa Wiklund, DFL-Bloomington, that would have imposed a new fee on insulin manufacturers to help fund the program was rejected by the committee. Jensen said he believes the manufacturers will eventually support about 90 percent of the program.
