30:34Now PlayingMembers of the People of Color and Indigenous Caucus (POCI) spoke to the press Monday, June 28, about their dissatisfaction with the omnibus judiciary and public safety budget bill. With just days before the new fiscal year begins July 1, lawmakers representing citizens of diverse backgrounds had hoped for significant reforms to police procedures following the murder of George Floyd last year. The current budget proposal agreed to by the DFL-led House and the Republican-led Senate leaves out many of the changes sought by members of the POCI caucus. The members have pledged to introduce many of the measures as amendments to the bill during the coming House floor debate.
According to Rep. Carlos Mariani, DFL-St. Paul, chair of the House Public Safety and Criminal Justice Reform committee, "The core function of our government is to provide for the safety of each and every citizen and resident of our state." Some of the reforms missing from the global public safety agreement pertain to no-knock warrants, pre-textual stops and a timeline for the release of body camera footage to impacted families.
