21:08Now PlayingSaying that the omnibus judiciary and public safety bill is "first and foremost about funding the courts, funding our police officers...and funding corrections," Senate Majority Leader Paul Gazelka, along with Senate Judiciary Chair Warren Limmer addressed the media Monday, June 28.
"We said we are not going to do any anti-police provisions in this bill, and I think we are successful at that," Gazelka said. "We also didn't want to take any of the tools away that our police need as far as when they are trying to keep our streets safe."
Provisions included in the Governor and legislative leaders agreed-upon bill came under criticism by members of the People of Color and Indigenous (POCI) Caucus, who claimed that additional police reform measures are needed. In response, Limmer said that "many of the policy provisions were not heard in the Senate during the regular session. That's because traditionally we look at budget years as exactly that--budget bills should be in budget years."
The Senate is set to debate the omnibus judiciary and public safety funding and policy bill Tuesday, June 29.
