38:47Now PlayingA pair of Republican lawmakers and law enforcement representatives gathered in the State Capitol Rotunda Friday, January 14, to highlight legislative proposals intended to curb rising crime. “There are many problems confronting Minnesotans, but the number one problem is the rise of violence and property crime in the Twin Cities,” said Senator Paul Gazelka, R-East Gull Lake.
Due to the “record numbers of carjackings,” Senator Gazelka plans to introduce legislation that would mandate a minimum sentence of 2-6 years, depending upon the circumstances of the crime. A second proposal would prohibit prosecutors and judges from waiving the current minimum sentence of five years for repeat offenders who commit crimes with firearms. Lastly, to increase the recruitment of police officers, Gazelka would like to see signing bonuses implemented as well as increased compensation for members of law enforcement.
