3:19:35Now PlayingTo encourage more post-secondary education students to pursue law enforcement degrees and trade careers, the Senate gave its final approval Wednesday, May 4, to the omnibus higher education bill, which provides financial educational incentives.
Sponsored by Higher Education Chair David Tomassoni, I-Chisholm, and Vice-Chair Jason Rarick, R-Pine City, the bill establishes a skills path program for high school students to pursue careers in skilled work and trades. Specifically, the Office of Higher Education would award grants of up to $50,000 to ten high schools to help students develop skills in trades facing workforce shortages. To increase student interest in law enforcement, the measure would provide grants of up to $3,000 for students enrolled in law enforcement programs.
The bill further provides funding to improve public safety efforts on Minnesota's university campuses. An amendment offered by Senator Jason Rarick would require the University of Minnesota to establish a commission on intercollegiate sports prior to receiving the state funds. The amendment generated considerable debate among members due to the University's constitutional autonomy. The amendment passed on a narrow 34-33 vote.
The higher education bill will be forwarded to a conference committee, where differences between the Senate and House versions will be addressed.
