2:03Now PlayingCompetitive grants totaling $500,000 per year would be available to organizations offering free, clean diapers to needy families, under SF 2599, a bill authored by Senator Liz Bolden, DFL-Rochester.
According to Bolden, 1 out of 3 Minnesota families are unable to afford diapers for children 3 years of age and younger. "That has impacts in terms of health for our little ones, also in terms of mental health for parents," she said.
"To make ends meet, many parents reuse soiled diapers or use household items such as t-shirts, paper towels, even plastic bags," said Deidre Kanzer, Executive Director of Diaper Bank Minnesota. She said the bill would support infant and toddler health, increase childcare access and allow more parents to work.
The bill was laid over for possible inclusion in the omnibus funding bill.
