3:35Now PlayingThe Senate passed a measure Monday, March 27, that boosts the Housing Development Fund by $50 million for homelessness prevention efforts. The money would provide financial assistance for rent and utility payments to household families that are at risk of being homeless.
According to bill author Lindsey Port, DFL-Burnsville, about 590,000 Minnesota families face choices between losing their homes or paying for other basic necessities, such as food and medicine. Port said the housing evictions in 2023 are up by 25 percent over pre-pandemic averages. "This is not a catch-up in our court system. This is the new normal," she said.
