as posted by the channelChennai Customs have confirmed that 740 tonnes of Ammonium Nitrate seized back in 2015 has been kept on storage since then.
The matter came to light after a State politician brought out the issue raising concerns following the Beirut blast in Lebanon which killed 100 and left 4000 injured, not to mention the vast damage to property.
However, Customs officials have claimed that the chemical has been stored in a Container Freight Station at Manali which is 20 km away from the City and no residential settlements within 2 km radius.
The consignment filling 37 containers was seized by Customs after Amman Chemicals, based out of Karur had imported it for agricultural activities but without due license.
An investigation by officials had also revealed that Ammonium Nitrate was actually sold to companies for use in stone quarries, construction and mining activities for blasting operations.
Hence Ammonium Nitrate (Prill Type), total declared quantity of 740 Metric Tonnes which were packed in 37 containers weighing 1,80,40,741 rupees was siezed.
A case was even filed by Amman Chemicals but the judges ruled in favor of Chennai Customs and Chief Controller of Explosives in mainly denying P5 license to import the chemical in the Nation's interest.
Since then the consignment has been stored in the CFS facility but the recent Beirut blast involving the Chemical has also made the Customs to assure that the Prills will be disposed off soon, following all safety measures.
