Institute of Eminence tag would bring a huge grant which could be used for infrastructure development, claims MK Surappa. But, the controversy erupted as Opposition alleges that IoE would impact 69% reservation system in Tamilnadu which is the highest in the Nation.
Government sources allege that Cabinet is upset as MK Surappa wrote the letter without the State government's consent. Surappa states that he had to do so as time was of the essence and there was a deadline to meet. Also, Surappa had hinted that University did not need financial aid from the State government and had internal means to generate 1,570 crore rupees.
Institute of Eminence is a tag that comes with a 1000 crore rupees grant split and provided by Center and State government equally. The opposition had questioned Surappa's intent claiming that it Center's move to take full control of the University and later tamper with State's 69% reservation policy. Education activists also raised the same query citing various sections from UGC Regulations 2017, stating that though ownership would be with State government, it would be regulated by Central Regulations. Anna University was established in 1978 and is now an affiliated authority for close to 550 engineering colleges in Tamilnadu. State Opposition has unanimously sought the resignation of Vice-Chancellor Suappa while State government has not come forward to provide and support.
