The auspicious day of Diwali is all about bringing people together and bringing goods during Dhanteras, but this sentiment and ritual were difficult to be fulfilled as stepping out during these COVID times marks to be dangerous. How did the markets manage to manage their sales this festive season? How did the customers balance shopping as well as following COVID protocols? With the danger of the coronavirus lurking around the country, citizens managed to shop for Diwali cautiously wearing masks and maintaining social distancing in jewellery stores and marketplaces.
3. Textile shops and jewellery stores opened their doors on the eve of Diwali with high hopes of economic recovery. However, did their expectations meet this year amidst the COVID scare? Did shoppers step out in numbers as expected by sellers to fulfil their economic needs? Stores and markets worked with only half of the required workforce and shop owners struggled to pay their workers due to the economic hit caused by the nationwide COVID19 lockdown. The hopes that this festive season would push up their sales and help them stand on recovery was high, however lack of variety in limited production and less number of customers meant otherwise for the country's sellers and vendors.
4. Indian handmade local diyas replaced Chinese goods this festive season as the 'vocal for local' initiative took this further raising hopes for diya sellers for better sales this Diwali. Customers seek diyas instead of electric lights this time as they rejected China-made goods and cheaper lights opting for diyas made and sold by local vendors. This Diwali seemed bright for the local sellers.
5. Firecracker ban takes a heavy toll on sellers in many states and cracker shops suffer great losses. Many states banned the use and sale of firecrackers this Diwali to prevent further crisis regarding air pollution which did not go well for the firecracker market. Cracker sellers suffered tremendous loss as the sales in firecrackers took a great hit in this year's festive season.
