Speaking to Times Now, on being asked what went wrong in Chamoli, Uttarakhand, Director General Ranjit Rath, Geological Survey of India (GSI), said that while the precise explanation of what happened might not be available at the moment, prima facie looked like a probably triggered glacier burst due to a slope collapse, landslide or damming impact.
On Sunday afternoon, a portion of the Nanda Devi glacier broke and triggered sudden flooding in the Rishi Ganga and Dhauli Ganga rivers, leading to 14 reported dead and at least 170 missing. Although GSI officials said attempts are being made to set up alarm systems in such areas in order to give a warning or alert to avert such tragedies.
