27:10Now PlayingIn the wake of the deaths of M Karunanidhi (DMK) and J Jayalalithaa, Tamil Nadu holds elections for its 234 seats in the assembly (AIADMK). The outcome of this election will also have an impact on the future paths of the two Dravidan parties. While the DMK still has the upper hand in its alliance with the Congress, the AIADMK has succumbed to the BJP's overwhelming dominance since the death of its supreme leader.
The AIADMK is running for 177 seats as part of a three-party alliance; the DMK is fielding its own candidates in 173 seats and 14 seats from a partner under its icon. Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswamy, a four-term MLA, and Opposition leader MK Stalin, a six-term MLA, are seen as direct opponents in the polls.
