On The Urban Debate, Tanvi Shukla discusses the disparity in the manufacturing and usage of vaccine doses in India. The Central government has stated that the country’s monthly manufacturing capacity is 6.5 crore doses and yet, only 3.7 crore doses have been administered so far in May, which is 43% of the manufacturing capacity. Average daily vaccination in May is 38.63% lower in April. Aam Aadmi Party’s Reena Gupta says “Central government had allocated 35,000 crore to vaccinate whole country and according to May data, they have spent hardly 3-4 crore”. Lawyer Murali Neelakantan lists out reason as to why the difficulty of vaccine availability won’t ease out in the near future. Tanvi Shukla further moots the topic of whether the government is rationing out whatever is currently available considering that it doesn’t know when the next round of vaccine doses will come.
