The facts regarding mental healthcare in India are alarming. India has 0.03 and 0.07 psychiatrists and psychologists per 100,000 citizens. According to estimates , by the end of 2021, 20% of the Indian population will be suffering from some kind of mental illness. Dr. Santosh Chaturvedi, Consultant Psychiatrist says “We are sitting on a ticking bomb of mental health problems and something needs to be done urgently”. He also lists out new mental health issues which might come up as a result of the pandemic. Dr. Sheilu Sreenivasan, Founder President of Dignity Foundation explains how one should go about reaching out to people around them during the pandemic.
