The event occurred on Wednesday night when a group of fishermen from Mandapam port in Tamil Nadu went into the water. According to the fishermen, they were fishing near Kachchatheevu when five Sri Lankan Navy patrol boats approached them and began throwing stones at them. Kachchatheevu is an uninhabited island in the Palk Strait between Sri Lanka and India, located between Neduntheevu and Rameswaram. Both Sri Lankan and Indian fishermen have long used it.
