This is being done to prevent the massive crowds that gather in front of liquor shops every year. The ban will be from 10pm on December 31st to the morning of January 1st. The High Court has allowed new year celebrations in Puducherry, a place that is very popular among tourists. The decision to ban liquor sales on new year eve to curb the spread of COVID-19 in the area. A petition appeared before the HC to ban all new year celebrations keeping in view the rise in the number of cases. But the Government argued that it had put multiple restrictions after taking advice from the state health secretary. What remains to be seen is how well the ban works on the last night of the year.
