Later today, he will fly from the Maldives to Singapore. In the meantime, President Rajapaksa has appointed Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to exercise, perform, and discharge the powers and duties of the Office of President during his absence by issuing an Extraordinary Gazette. The current economic crisis in Sri Lanka has prompted the public to demand the President's resignation. Acting President Ranil Wickremesinghe gave the police and military orders to calm things down amid the mayhem and chaos in Sri Lanka.
