Chidambaram is a vocal critic of the Centre and has slammed it for propagating and even forcing Hindi on parts of the country which do not speak the language. Southern states particularly Tamil Nadu has been extremely protectionist of its language and has even refused to implement the National Education Policy on charges that it forces Hindi on students.
