All exit polls, with the exception of two, anticipated an advantage for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and pollsters are closely monitoring which way voters have turned in the closely contested race as the results are being counted. Since 1985, Himachal Pradesh has not elected an incumbent administration to office; the current BJP seeks to buck this trend with the help of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's individualised campaign. Over 75% of the 55 lakh eligible voters in the state cast ballots in the election of the 68-member legislature and government on November 12. There are 412 candidates running for office in this election.
