Activists chastised the BMC for failing to plan the closure of the Gopal Krishna Gokhale bridge in Andheri. "If the civic body had the competence to examine the bridge and reach their own conclusion, why did they approach Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI) and the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-B)?" the activists questioned. Instead of closing the bridge overnight, causing thousands of commuters to be inconvenienced, the civic authority should have sought expert advice first, they said. The closure of the vital east-west connector has exacerbated traffic congestion in the Andheri area. The guest for tonight, Chandrasekhar Prabhu (Urban planner) said, "These bridges have outlived their effective life span. Proper planning is required for the restoration of these bridges".
