After a graphic video of the boy's torture went viral online, the police were able to solve a six-month-old case of a boy's disappearance and his murder case. A man was shown being tied down and spanked by a gang in the brief video that quickly became popular on social media. The police established that the man who was assaulted in the video was Sharat, who had been missing for the previous six months, and that his attackers were neighborhood loan sharks to whom he owed money. In the footage, a group was seen forcing a man to sit on the ground while tying his wrists and legs. With a large rope in his hand, a man without a shirt circled the subject. The man spoke out as he repeatedly beat the victim on the ground.
