Breaking News: Law Commission Backs Sedition Law, 'Sedition Punishment Should Be Increased'

As per the late news on the sedition law, the Law Commission backs the sedition law and is soon to submit a report on the same to the Centre.

As far as the scrapping of the sedition law is concerned, the Law Commission has submitted a report to the government saying that the sedition law was not revoked altogether. And it says sedition offences under Breaking News: Section 124 of the Indian Penal Code should be retained with certain amendments. The Commission has recommended amendments to this section to provide more clarity. And proposes that the punishment for sedition offences be increased. The Commission has recommended that sedition be made punishable by imprisonment for a term of up to 7 years, up from the existing 3 years. And on why it has submitted a report, the Law Commission says it received a reference from the Ministry of Home Affairs in March 2016 for a study of the usage of the provision of Section 124A and suggests amendments. In fact, the Law Commission says that sedition laws are required to safeguard the unity and integrity of India. It says a threat exists to India's unity, integrity, sovereignty, and internal security.
