Tomato prices in India have surpassed the record levels due to prolonged shortages in key producer state. This sudden surge in prices can be attributed to heavy rains and reduced tomato production. In Uttarakhand, vegetable wholesalers have auctioned a crate of 25 kilos for Rs 4,100, resulting in wholesale prices exceeding Rs 5,000 per crate in Delhi. In response to the crisis, fast-food chains and restaurants are temporarily removing tomatoes from their products. To alleviate the burden on consumers, the central government is providing subsidies and selling tomatoes at discounted rates. Unfortunately, the situation is likely to persist until September when more supply is expected to arrive.
