12:58Now PlayingIn this episode of the Urban Debate, anchor Shreya Dhoundial will discuss whether the age of consent under the POCSO Act be reduced to 16 from 18. All sexual activities for those under the age of 18 have been criminalized under the POCSO Act, 2012, even if there is consent between the two minors. Criminalisation despite consent has been cited as a major reason for the suggested changes. The judiciary has repeatedly urged lawmakers to separate the ‘age of consent’ from the 'age of marriage’ as courts across India are flooded with cases in which consenting teenagers are prosecuted for acts that become illegal simply because of their age.
A panel of experts has joined Shreya Dhoundial for a detailed discussion. Ex-NCW Chairperson, Lalitha Kumaramangalam, said, “Girls are immature at 16 & romanticise the idea of love & sex. We don't even give sex education at schools. India is not ready for this where age is lowered from 18-16.” Watch the full discussion to know more and follow Mirror Now for the latest updates.
