3:08Now PlayingHundreds of demonstrators marched through Leipzig on Saturday to protest planned welfare cuts, accusing Chancellor Friedrich Merz's government of shifting the cost of its economic agenda onto ordinary people. Footage shows protesters walking through the city centre carrying banners that say 'We will not pay for your wars' and 'Your wars and crises are not our burden', among other things, while chanting anti-austerity slogans.
According to the organisers, more than 1,000 people joined the demonstration, which was held under the slogan 'Enough is enough!' and backed by the Left Party, the Verdi trade union, the Education and Science Workers' Union (GEW), and the Leipzig Stands Together initiative. Protesters reportedly criticised the government's decision to replace the Burgergeld welfare scheme with the Neue Grundsicherung (New Basic Security) from July 1, 2026.
