3:15Now PlayingBritish authorities have charged 38-year-old Indian national Ajay Pant, the captain of the tanker MV Smyrtos, with violating UK sanctions related to Russian oil shipments. The charges come after British commandos and National Crime Agency officers boarded and seized the vessel during a six-hour operation in the English Channel on June 14.
According to prosecutors, Pant is accused of directly or indirectly transporting prohibited Russian oil products to a third country, in breach of Britain's Russia sanctions regulations. The MV Smyrtos is alleged to be part of Russia's "shadow fleet" — a network of vessels used to transport Russian oil while bypassing Western sanctions imposed after Moscow's invasion of Ukraine. British officials say the operation marks the first UK-led seizure of a sanctioned shadow fleet vessel. The tanker was intercepted south of the Isle of Wight and later detained off England's southern coast.
