4:25Now PlayingMorocco's Round of 16 win at the 2026 FIFA World Cup sent supporters into the streets of The Hague on Saturday, where celebrations following a 3-0 victory over Canada later gave way to unrest in the Schilderswijk district. Footage shows large crowds filling the streets after the match, before riot police moved in to disperse groups. Fans were seen burning flares and firecrackers on the road in celebration, while others played drums and performed Viking claps.
According to media reports, authorities later imposed emergency measures in part of the neighbourhood as the security operation continued late into the night. Dutch police said 13 people were arrested on June 30 after unrest linked to Morocco's win over the Netherlands, when crowds also gathered in and around Schilderswijk.
The district is one of The Hague's most diverse areas, with a young population and many restaurants and shops. For many Moroccan supporters in the Netherlands, the team's run has become a public celebration of national pride and diaspora identity. The result put Morocco into the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Azzedine Ounahi scored twice, and Soufiane Rahimi added a stoppage-time third in Houston, setting up a last-eight clash with France.
