Vladimir Putin visited the Archangel Cathedral inside the Moscow Kremlin and was briefed on the restoration and archaeological discoveries there.
Experts explain how restoration work forced them to carefully examine and remove the sarcophagus lid.
They describe the moment they discovered what they called “a miracle” inside.
Anthropologists identified the remains as those of a powerfully built man, estimated to have been around 175–177 cm tall.
The examination found traces of a severe injury to the frontal bone, which experts said appeared consistent with a combat injury.
Scientists also reported that soft tissue had survived in dried form, something they described as extremely rare for such a burial.
The remains were covered with textile material that researchers believe may have Mediterranean origins.
Experts describe the sarcophagus itself as an ancient Byzantine form.
They explain that the archaeological and anthropological evidence provides information that is not contained in the limited surviving chronicle references.
The remains are being preserved while selected tiny samples are used for further genetic, radiocarbon and other laboratory research.
The experts describe the burial as an exceptionally important find because it provides researchers with access to a 14th-century princely burial that had not previously been scientifically examined in this way.
