Slow-motion video (1/4 speed) of paperclips attracted toward a high-temperature superconducting magnet which is housed behind the shielding visible on the right-hand side of the screen. The paperclips are accelerated in the magnetic field before being arrested on the surface of the shielding, and then oscillate slowly about their orientation along magnetic field lines.

The superconducting coil, itself, is wound from 1000 turns of YBCO tape in two layers (the "double pancake" design), and reaches 7 tesla in the space at its center, or about 100 000 times the strength of the Earth's magnetic field. It is cooled to 4 K (four degrees above absolute zero) with liquid helium, though the YBCO material is still superconducting at liquid nitrogen temperatures (77 K) and higher. The coil sits on its side, with its magnetic axis pointing roughly through the center of the cluster of paperclips.
