0:50Now PlayingThe steel plumb in this video is floating in a magnetic field created by a superconducting magnet which is housed behind the shielding visible on the right-hand side of the screen. A string keeps the plumb from crashing into the magnet housing. After being disturbed from its rest position, the plumb oscillates back and fourth like a pendulum.
The superconducting coil, itself, is wound from 1000 turns of YBCO tape in two layers (the "double pancake" design), and reaches 7 tesla in the space at its center, or about 100 000 times the strength of the Earth's magnetic field. It is cooled to 4 K (four degrees above absolute zero) with liquid helium, though the YBCO material is still superconducting at liquid nitrogen temperatures (77 K) and higher. The coil sits on its side, with its magnetic axis pointing roughly along the string connected to the plumb.
