Acting U.S. Attorney Joseph H. Thompson called the crime “the stuff of nightmares,” detailing how Vance Boelter, 57, disguised himself as a police officer—complete with tactical gear, flashing lights, and a hyper-realistic silicone mask—to stalk and kill lawmakers. Before entering Hortman's home, Boelter opened fire on police officers and then fatally shot both Hortman and her husband, Mark, before fleeing out the back. Authorities said he had compiled research on other political targets and planned additional attacks that night.
