2:03Now PlayingA French appeals court has ruled to release Lebanese militant Georges Ibrahim Abdallah from prison after nearly four decades, despite staunch opposition from the United States. Abdallah, who at 74 is reported to be the longest-serving political prisoner in France, will be freed as long as he leaves the country and never returns. The former head of the Lebanese Armed Revolutionary Factions was sentenced to life at the Lannemezan prison (Hautes-Pyrénées) in 1987, for his role in the assassinations of a US military attache and Israeli diplomat, as well as the attempted murder of US Consul General Robert Homme. He reportedly declared at the time "I do what I do because of the injustice done to human rights where Palestine is concerned." According to his lawyer, Abdallah has never wavered on his convictions, which he calls “a political victory, even after nearly 41 years in detention, against the United States."
