Azerbaijan doesn't permit Armenians to enter Artsakh monastery; dollar rises in price, Feb 9 digest

DADIVANK

Azerbaijan soldiers did not permit Armenian pilgrims to enter the Dadivank Monastery of Artsakh.

According to the agreement reached via the mediation of Russian peacekeeping forces stationed in the region, Armenian pilgrims were allowed to enter Dadivank as of the end of November.

According to the arrangement, on Sunday, February 7 at 8am, another group of pilgrims left for Dadivank, escorted by the Russian peacekeepers.

The pilgrims’ group approached the Azerbaijani checkpoint, but the Azerbaijanis boastingly forbade it, reasoning that they were not informed about the group.

SEARCHES

Search operations for Armenian soldiers' bodies in settlements outside Artsakh control have been suspended on Tuesday amid the shift change in the Azerbaijani army.

Works will resume on Wednesday.

A total of 1,367 bodies have been found so far.

POWS RETURN

Russian ambassador to Armenia Sergey Kopirkin said the return of Armenian prisoners of war is an issue that Russian president Vladimir Putin, FM Sergey Lavrov, and Defense Minister Sergey Shoygu are personally dealing with.

"Of course, the solution might not be as quick as we would like it to be, but believe me - maximum efforts are being made," he said.

PROTESTS

Armenia police special forces were “clearing” area from peaceful demonstrators in Yerevan on Tuesday.

The red beret special forces apprehended peaceful protesters from the sidewalk near the Ministry of Economy so that Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan could arrive at the ministry.

Those apprehended were carrying out the "Nikol, the traitor" protest.

Opposition youth representatives Taron Ghazaryan and member Hayk Manukyan were among those who were apprehended.

PRESIDENT EXPECTED TO RETURN

President Armen Sarkissian, who has been receiving medical treatment for a long time and is working remotely after testing positive for COVID-19, may return to Armenia this weekend.

Sarkissian will continue his medical treatment in the capital Yerevan as well.

ARONIAN

Armenian chess star Levon Aronian is being criticised in Armenia for his intention to move to the US and represent this country in the chess tournaments.

His mother Sona, turned to her Facebook to support her son.

“No one is to blame for your unsuccessful life, stop criticizing the talented grandmaster, trying to present him as a traitor to your homeland. Thanks to Levon's victories, the rating of Armenia increased, and not the rating of the president of the Armenian Chess Federation. Stop politicizing my son's historical achievements," she said.

COVID-19 IN ARMENIA

Armenia has confirmed 123 COVID-19 new cases, and the total number of these cases has reached 168,300.

Three more deaths from COVID-19 were reported, making the respective total 3,126 cases.

The number of people who have recovered so far is 160,169, and the number of people currently being treated is 4,221.

DOLLAR, EURO ON RISE

The dollar and the euro exchange rates are still rising in Armenia.

The exchange rate of the US dollar has reached AMD 522.60 - up by AMD 0.80, while the exchange rate of the euro totaled AMD 632.76 - up by AMD 5.09.
