He Came to Tell Me Israelis Are Fake. He Left Not Sure If He's Palestinian.

A 19-year-old Palestinian diaspora joined my live to tell me no one in Israel is actually Israeli. His argument: if you ask Israelis where their family is from, they eventually say Iraq or Europe. I had one question: do you know where the name "Palestine" comes from?

But I started somewhere else. He opened by claiming 300,000 Palestinians have been killed. I pulled up the Gaza Ministry of Health, run by Hamas, which puts the number at 73,000 out of 2.2 million people. That's 3%. He said "maybe okay, yeah" and dropped the number.

He said the conflict started in 1948 when Jews began displacing Arabs. I asked him about the 1929 Hebron massacre when Arabs entered a hostel built by Jews to bridge communities and killed 67 people, including children, in their sleep. He said: "I gotta actually look into that. That's new to me." I listed the 1517 Hebron massacre and the 1936-39 Jaffa riots where 510 Jews were killed. All before 1948. All new to him.

I asked if he'd heard of Haj Amin al-Husseini, the first recognized Palestinian Arab leader, the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, who advocated for spilling Jewish blood, rioted against Jewish migration, and personally met with Hitler to request a concentration camp be established in Nablus. He said: "No." I told him al-Husseini's family line connects to Yasser Arafat, who founded the PLO in 1964, created Black September in Jordan, killing the prime minister, was expelled to Lebanon, where the Palestinian insurgency slaughtered Christians and started the Lebanese Civil War, which killed over 200,000 civilians. The caller's family lives in Jordan.

Then I told him where the name "Palestine" actually comes from. Roman Emperor Hadrian renamed the province of Judea after expelling the Jews, he called it Syria Palaestina, derived from the Philistines and Assyrians, who were Greek merchants. I asked him: so your descendants are they from the Philistines, which are European?

He said: "Maybe. Potentially. See, now you got you got me."

Then I mentioned Husseini and Hitler. He hung up.

His entire knowledge of the conflict came from oral family tradition. When I asked for a book recommendation, he said: "I don't got book recommendations, but books are weird."
