2:23Now PlayingSerhiy Dutka, a master of traditional ceramics and teacher at the Kosiv Institute of Applied and Decorative Arts, says one way that the traditional craft can play an important role in life now is for tradition to directly support the war efforts.
An annual ceramics symposium where local ceramicists worked with the international community was canceled due to war and, though they have other events during war time, they haven’t been able to have them at scale. Now the events are focused on raising money to support troops on the frontlines.
In much of Dutka’s work, even in the past, he’s found ways to bring the traditional style into the present so that they can be enjoyed and incorporated into life today, and not lost. In ways like this, he says, people can continue to make new traditions even now.
