0:30Now PlayingSpeaking to local journalists on Wednesday, Maj. Aloyce Were, a Kenya Space Agency Official, said that the partially burnt metallic object weighs about 500 kilograms. It was most likely a fragment from a rocket, he added. He cautioned the locals to not be afraid of it.
“It is a part of a space object which is in form of a ring, a metallic ring, possibly from a rocket separation stage,” he explained.
Were was seen speaking to the police and extensively inspecting the debris.
He said that the next steps will include an assessment of damage to the area and research into the object's origin country.
After that has concluded, Kenya's Space Agency will "use the existing legal mechanisms under international law as far as the outer space treaty is concerned.”
