How this Ultra-Sensitive Listening Device will Reveal the Ocean

This is Julian Race. He works on the MV Alucia, preparing to go and work on #OceanXplorer. He's the science and technical officer—STO—who controls #OceanXplorer's exquisitely sensitive acoustic gondola. It's a bell full of instruments tucked near the bow of the ship, as high and far from all of the engines so it can do its important listening. In the ocean, sound is really definite, so you can "hear" swarms of krill swarming and things like that. It's an audio painting (which is probably how a lot of marine animals experience the world). Our gondola will give us the eyes and ears of a marine creature, then see how we deploy it in tandem with the vehicles (camera mounted ROVs and subs) to illuminate, investigate, and share it with the world.
