YouTube Description
as posted by the channel📍 Azores, Portugal
Join us on the OceanXplorer for an ROV dive in the Azores, Portugal, as we explore the biodiversity of the seamounts here.
On this dive, we’re traveling up a slope from a depth of 900 meters to 200 meters, looking for corals and deep-sea sponges.
The goal of this dive is to look at how the communities of deep-sea sponges and corals shift as the depth changes, and to learn how abundant the different species are.
The samples we take today will help identify some of these species we see on the video–some of them are almost impossible to identify by the image alone, because one species can come in many different shape, or different species can look nearly identical.
The scientist joining us on this dive is Guilherme Gonçalves. He studies deep sea biodiversity in the mid-Atlantic at the University of the Azores.
