YouTube Description
as posted by the channelWe’re back in Indonesia—deepening the work we began in 2024.
In collaboration with BRIN (Indonesia’s National Research & Innovation Agency), OceanX is launching a new deep-sea mission: Beneath the Ring – The Sulawesi Seamounts.
Last year, we helped deliver vital ocean data to support sustainable fisheries, Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), tsunami preparedness, and biodiversity conservation. We also provided training for early-career scientists to strengthen Indonesia’s growing capacity in ocean research.
Now, we’re building on that foundation.
Aboard the R/V OceanXplorer, we’ve returned to explore newly discovered seamounts off Northern Sulawesi—located within the Ring of Fire. This mission brings together 18 scientists from Indonesia and around the world to investigate six key areas of ocean science, including:
- Submarine geology and hydrothermal activity
- Deep-sea biodiversity and ecosystem health
- Ocean currents and ecological connectivity
- Marine genomics and eDNA
- Megafauna and food web dynamics
- Carbon cycling and ecosystem services
What lies beneath could help shape the future of ocean protection for Indonesia and beyond.
