But while Edie Middlestein only seemed real, Mazie Phillips-Gordon, protagonist of Attenberg’s fourth novel, was an actual figure. Known as “Queen of the Bowery,” Mazie was born poor, worked hard, and liked a good time. She ran the Venice movie house and during the Depression helped the many who were down on their luck.
