Part of a charmed couple, California-born Harpham fell in love with a writer in New York. But he didn’t want children, and when Harpham got pregnant, she left him, moving back home to deliver her daughter. If the parents broke up because of the child, the child’s serious illness brought them back together. Harpham, an award-winning essayist, fiction writer, and playwright now teaching at Sarah Lawrence College and SUNY Purchase, explores the resilience and passion that go into the making of a family.
