55:57Now PlayingStahr’s illuminating account of Edwin Stanton (1814-1869) is the first new biography of Lincoln’s secretary of war in fifty years. The award-winning author of Seward and John Jay, Stahr focuses on Stanton’s crucial role in the struggle to hold the nation together. Responsible for organizing the overall war effort, Stanton mobilized and directed the more than one million men who served in the Union armed forces. But he also arrested and imprisoned thousands for resisting the draft or calling for an end to the war. His aggression made him widely controversial, to the point that some suspected he’d been involved in Lincoln’s assassination. Rather, as Stahr shows, Stanton took the lead in reassuring the country after Lincoln’s death.
