Its sequel, Shark, was a wild fever dream of a book that followed Busner as he opened, and attempted to run, an experimental residential center. Now Self concludes the trilogy with a novel set in the digital age, one that, fittingly, reads like a data stream. Beset by the twin demons of too much information and Alzheimer’s, Busner is struggling not to lose his mind. Meanwhile, in a parallel story line, the cryptic Jonathan De’Ath, aka The Butcher, negotiates a complicated relationship with Colonel Gawain Thomas, a tank commander.
