Ramsey’s career as an activist, comedian, and commentator on race and culture wasn’t planned. It started with the explosive response to her YouTube video, “Shit White Girls Say...to Black Girls.” She realized she had to jump in or risk having the conversation move on without her. In this open, humorous, and earnest collection of essays, Ramsey, host of the webseries Decoded on MTV, draws on what her experiences as a public voice have taught her about communication in the social media age, including the threat of internet trolls and racists, and how to deal with them. She also assesses her own learning curve, confessing that she was once an online hater but now understands that we can have tough dialogues and still move forward. Ramsey will be in conversation with Damon Young, editor-in-chief of VerySmartBrothas and a columnist for GQ.com.
Franchesca Ramsey is a social justice advocate, comedian, actress, writer, video blogger, sought-after speaker, and the host of the award-winning web series Decoded on MTV. With videos topping 12 million views, she has been featured on NPR, Anderson Cooper, CNN, MTV, the BBC, and in the New York Times. A former writer and correspondent for The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore, she now has a major late-night television show in development with Comedy Central. She lives in New York City and this is her first book.
