Patrick Kabanda, The Creative Wealth of Nations", at Politics and Prose on 7/2/18.

For Kabanda, growing up in straitened circumstances in Uganda, music was first a refuge, then a passion, and then became the seed of a groundbreaking social vision. Entranced by the organ at Kampala’s Namirembe Cathedral, Kabanda joined the choir and learned to play the piano. Later, as a Juilliard-trained musician, he performed worldwide and, observing how music can uplift and unite people, pursued a degree in international affairs with the objective of incorporating the arts into development projects. Showing how culture can both enrich people personally and be a vital engine for a nation’s economic growth, Kabanda, who has consulted for the World Bank and contributed to the World Development Report 2016, explores the valuable roles the arts can play in promoting international trade, education, sustainability, and social inclusion.

Kabanda is in conversation with Munit Mesfin, an Ethiopian-American musician, creative director, and event consultant.
