One of the pre-eminent American historians of our time, Foner, whose 2011 study of Lincoln and slavery, The Fiery Trial, won the Pulitzer, Bancroft, and Lincoln Prizes, is a major authority on the Civil War and Reconstruction. His new book focuses on the Reconstruction Amendments—the thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth—and his rich narrative delves into the political negotiations and citizen meetings that enshrined these provisions and follows their uneven history in bringing about the equality promised in the Declaration of Independence. Foner is in conversation with Eric Holder, the first African American to hold the position of U.S. Attorney General, and Jamelle Bouie, journalist and columnist for The New York Times and political analyst for CBS News.
