55:42Now PlayingSarah Hurwitz discusses her book, "Here All Along", with Dana Bash of CNN at Politics and Prose
A former speechwriter for John Kerry, Hillary Clinton, and both Barack and Michelle Obama, Hurwitz once had little need for religion beyond occasional visits to the synagogue. Then on impulse at age thirty-six, she attended a beginner’s class in Judaism—and it changed her life. In this eloquent spiritual memoir, Hurwitz recounts her initial surprise and joy at discovering Judaism’s beautiful rituals and ethical wisdom. Going deeper into Judaic traditions and practices, she chronicles her conversations with rabbis, her wide-ranging reading, and her experiences at Jewish meditation retreats and Orthodox Shabbat tables to elaborate the many reasons why Judaism matters. Hurwitz is in conversation with Dana Bash, CNN chief political correspondent.
From 2009 to 2017, Sarah Hurwitz worked in the White House, serving as head speechwriter for First Lady Michelle Obama and as a senior speechwriter for President Barack Obama. Prior to working in government, Hurwitz was the chief speechwriter for Hillary Clinton on her 2008 campaign for president and a speechwriter for Senator John Kerry and General Wesley Clark during the 2004 presidential election. Hurwitz is a graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Law School.
