When O’Meara, a screenwriter, genre film producer, and co-host of the weekly literary podcast Reading Glasses, wanted to learn more about Milicent Patrick, the woman who created the Gill-man costume head for the eponymous Creature from the Black Lagoon, she came up empty-handed. Knowing only that Patrick had been one of Disney’s first female animators, she set out to discover the rest of the story—along with why it wasn’t better known. Her book profiles a fascinating, talented woman whose achievements, when not overlooked by men, were claimed by men. O’Meara’s compelling detective work restores a valuable chapter to film history, and also suggests there’s much about women’s roles in the film industry still to be uncovered.
